Abstract: «Mata Hari and Enrique Gómez Carrillo». This article examines El misterio de la vida y de la muerte de Mata Hari (1924) by Enrique Gómez Carrillo as a key work for understanding the convergence of investigative journalism and literary chronicle in the Guatemalan author’s production. The study focuses on the book’s structure, narrative strategies, and use of documentary sources, with the aim of demonstrating how Gómez Carrillo articulates historical research, contextual description, epistolary testimony, and subjective reflection within a hybrid construction that transcends conventional biography. The inclusion of documents, correspondence, and cross-referenced materials does not function as an ornamental device, but rather as the methodological core of a writing practice oriented toward the pursuit of truth amid wartime propaganda. Furthermore, the article argues that the representation of Mata Hari in the book reveals a critical stance toward the patriarchal structures that shaped her trial and execution. Gómez Carrillo portrays Mata Hari as an autonomous female figure whose affective and performative freedom was perceived as a threat within a context of exacerbated nationalism and conservative morality, thus configuring a form of early feminism. Consequently, this study vindicates the contemporary relevance of the work, not only as a historical document but as an example of a journalistic practice that blends archives, interpretation, and style, as well as investigative rigor, narrative sensitivity, and a commitment to the critical revision of official discourses.

Abstract: «Enrique Gómez Carrillo and His Love for the Land of the Rising Sun». This article analyses the relationship between Enrique Gómez Carrillo (1873-1927) and Japan from multiple perspectives: addressing it from his personal experience of the trip he took, his literary production, his aesthetic appropriation of Japanese culture, his role as a cultural mediator between East Asia and the Hispanic world, etc. Furthermore, based on an analysis of El alma japonesa (The Japanese Soul) and El Japón heroico y galante (Heroic and Gallant Japan), it will show how contact with Japan had a decisive influence on the author’s stylistic evolution and philosophical sensibility. Gómez Carrillo not only described modern Japan, but also constructed a literary image marked by the aesthetic fascination characteristic of modernism, intertwining admiration and exoticisation. In short, this study highlights how the Guatemalan writer incorporated Japanese aesthetic elements into his work, using them to renew his perspective and expand his expressive repertoire, as well as contributing to shaping the cultural reception of Japan in the early 20th century. Finally, the article proposes a critical reading of this mediation, highlighting the tensions between Gómez Carrillo’s modernist sensibility and the stereotypes that inevitably accompanied his interpretation of modern Japan.

Abstract: «Between the Non-place and the World. Genesis of a Modernist Chronicler». This study analyzes Enrique Gómez Carrillo’s «El despertar del alma» to reconstruct the intellectual formation of the modernista chronicler, positioning him between the «non-place» of his Guatemalan childhood and the cosmopolitan trajectory that shaped his literary career. Through a historical, social, and literary perspective, the article explores the specific features of Central American liberalism in the late 19th century, the writer’s ambiguous role within a transforming oligarchic society, and the tension between national belonging and universalist aspirations. It examines family influences, the symbolic function of the «name-of-the-father», his literary initiation under Rubén Darío, and the dynamics through which intellectuals engaged with political systems marked by both liberal ideals and dictatorial practices. The study also revisits Luis Cardoza y Aragón’s critique of Gómez Carrillo’s alleged lack of national rootedness, showing instead how nostalgia for the landscape and an awareness of social oppression coexist with his cosmopolitan identity. It concludes that Gómez Carrillo’s «non-place» is not a deficit but a productive frontier space that shapes his sensibility, style, and position within Hispanic American modernism.

Abstract: «A Literary Opening Between Continents. The Swedish Reception of Enrique Gómez Carrillo’s El evangelio del amor». This article presents the Spanish translation of the prologue written by Reigin Fridholm for the Swedish edition of Kärlekens evangelium (1926), a translation of El evangelio del amor (1922) by Enrique Gómez Carrillo. The recovery of this text sheds light on a little-studied episode in the history of the Nordic reception of Spanish American Modernism. The Swedish edition was the first translation into Swedish of a contemporary Spanish American literary work. Fridholm’s prologue combines an impressionistic style characteristic of early twentieth-century Swedish criticism with a comparative perspective that oscillates between admiration for the Latin world and an exoticizing reading. The translation preserves this register and retains expressions that are now problematic due to their strong historical imprint. The article also contextualizes Fridholm’s role as a cultural mediator in Sweden’s turn toward Southern literatures, highlighting the pioneering role of this edition in establishing an early literary bridge between Sweden and Latin America.

This article examines the narrative works of Enrique Gómez Carrillo through the lens of illness as a cultural construct. Through an analysis of Almas y cerebros, Tres novelas inmorales, and El evangelio del amor, the study argues that pathologies such as hysteria, neurasthenia, degeneration, obsession, fetishism, and the «diseases of sensation» function not as medical diagnoses but as symbolic articulations of modern subjectivity.
